DON'T LET SUMMER PASS YOU BY!  ENROLL IN BEAST ENRICHMENT SUMMER ACTIVITIES THAT WILL BE FUN, EXCITING, AND WILL GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO LEARN AND HAVE A GREAT TIME WITH FRIENDS!

students must have completed third grade to participate in our summer camps.

Classes will rotate through 4 1-week modules focusing on these areas:

Aviation – what’s it like to fly a fully loaded 747 that weighs over 450 tons and can cruise at over 550 mph? Students will learn how airplanes fly and why they actually stay in the air and then try to fly and land a plane through the use of a flight simulator.

Newton’s Laws of Motion – if Newton was right that “an object in motion tends to remain in motion” then why do baseballs, footballs, golf balls, and anything else thrown or hit eventually slow down and fall to the ground? We’ll figure that out along with other interesting facts regarding things in motion. (Think about the airplanes from the previous unit!)

Chemistry to Keep You Safe in the Sun – did you know the sun produces 3 different wavelengths of UV light? UVA, UVB, and UVC. Our atmosphere protects us from UVC, but the A and B wavelengths get through the atmosphere and even clouds that appear to be protecting us. That’s why you can get a sunburn on a cloudy day. A sunburn is caused by UVA and UVB penetrating the upper layers of the skin and damaging cells under the top layers. If the burns are bad or if you get burned over and over, the DNA in the skin cells can change and, in many cases, lead to skin cancer. This is not good! In this class, students will make their own sunscreen and lip balm to protect their skin from the cell damaging rays of the sun.

Rockets!- do you dream of going into space? Great! NASA has a program for you. Here at BEAST, we’ll learn about rockets, how they work, and build a variety of our own rockets powered by air, water, and the Estes rockets. Who knows? It could be the first step into a career as an astronaut.
